The only way a bad guy should have a gun with which to engage in a gunfight with under our current system is to take it from the FAM. I think what I'm arguing is that we should eliminate that possibility.
I am talking about multiple opponents. It doesn't matter what weapons they have (lets say a Monte Blanc pen), if you have enough people acting in concert they will blow past any obstacle unless you can put them down immediately. Holes in people's bodies tend to do that very thing. And if you are using your hands against someone with a pointy object (even an approved one like a pen or a plastic knife/fork broken off or a toothbrush sharpened to a point or anything thousands of convicts use every day to kill each other) then you are going to have a bad day and it will affect the quality of life from then point on.
Probably measured in minutes.
And if you think that the flight decks are secure you would be mistaken. They are not - too many officers just opening the door or the flight attendant opening the doors with no one looking behind them. Then it is just a foot race to the open door and the struggle for the opening. Then add the pointy objects to the mix and you have the makings of a horrible day.
But if someone can shoot them from behind....maybe? I don't know, but I think it a better idea than just trying to fight it out in the flight deck.
Not to mention that these guys will be looking for the FAMs now....and that looking instigates hesitation. Even if it is just to kill the obvious FAMs that gives everyone else time to 1) wake up, 2) screw up their courage and 3) try to make an attempt to save the plane.
I don't hold out much hope for such a fight but it might happen. One can hope at least....
