I have not flown LH Y since 2002 and I don t have the plan to do so in the future (I know never say never), but this procedure make the upgrade process a total gamble. I mean it can be hard an complicated to get upgrades or awards, but all other airlines at least give you the possibility of booking awards or upgrades at the time of booking. With AY now it looks like in the worst case scenario you pay for flights you never use and your vouchers expire. This will devalue their Gold and Platinum level, and I guess it will leave some frustrated customers.
I had to go back to records, but my last longhaul in econ was 2001, so we are pretty much in the same boat. (except one AY longhaul in "comfort" when upgrade didn't clear and one longhaul in true econ plus on SK)
I know I've said it before, but I share your view of the new value of vouchers. They are now aimed at the segment qualifiers. Those qualifying by longhaul J has lost yet another perk in the program.
