The weird thing is that mia's link indicates that as long as you have the correct software release, it should work. However, it appears that service code enforcement is not on by default, which seems silly. At least Square makes you opt out of that instead of opting into actually enforcing EMV.

(Another silly thing is EMV only working with US cards. I mean, I understand if you can't insert JCB or UnionPay or something, but you should be able to insert foreign Visa/MC cards just as well as domestic ones. This doesn't help with the impression some have that the US chip implementation is somehow different enough not to be compatible with EMV terminals elsewhere.)
