It's poetry, and a bit heavy, but Thom Gunn's work is marvelous. Either the collected poems or "The Man With Night Sweats" - as important a chronicle of the AIDS crisis as any in prose.

And for an old, a tad purple classic from a great writer, E.M. Forster's Maurice. But it's not as good as either Howard's End or Passage to India.
