If you are close to the airport, try go to the ticket counter at the airport instead of call the service desk. The queue is normally shorter and I've had luck in the past getting change done at the ticket counter which they wouldn't do over the phone.

Picking up the luggage and Immigration in US will be my worst fear in a situation similar to yous, but a 15 year old should be able to do it on her own.

Yes. You will have to go through passport check and probably also security check again on your way back. But assuming the flight for US leaves from pier F, once she is past passport check she really can't go wrong. If she manage to go wrong between the passport check and departure gate she will definitely not be able to pass immigration in US on he own.
