Ah, this makes so much sense to me now!! The line in the Terms & Conditions about it only applying to the year earned... I read that as: if I reach Titanium with the Double Elite Night Credits in 2019, it would only count for 2019!
I actually fired off an email to Marriott yesterday asking if these count for 2020 status!
But this interpretation makes so much more sense, that they only count for current year earnings, not lifetime totals.
Why don't they convey that more clearly? Just write - "Elite Night Credits earned during this promotion don't count for lifetime totals".
