So I'm always looking for good book recommendations - particularly for a long trip.

Overall, I've enjoyed David Leavitt the most - The Lost Language of Cranes was my first "gay" book (or at least, the first book recommended to me when I sought out something specifically for its gay characters and themes).

David Sedaris is also always great fun. Naked ranks up there as one of my all time favorite books.

Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City series. First 3 were the best IMO.
