Obviously passenger satisfaction does pass through to airline satisfaction or BA wouldn't have rushed to fix the economy seating on the 787-9. Passengers do avoid truly horrible or dangerous aircraft.
If that was the case, there would be no 10 wide Y on 777, or 9 wide Y on the 787. And people would have booked away from the DC 10 when It was flying. Which they did not.
