I stayed here for two nights in the Fantastic Bank Suite about a week ago. I had been suffering from an intestinal parasite for a week and a half as I travelled through Europe and had to seek medical help in Amsterdam, but unfortunately although the antibiotics cured me they didn't cure me until I had left. This meant I spent a ton of time in the room though.
During my stay the duchess had been completely reserved for breakfast for several days for some group related to aid in Africa, I don't really remember the details. When I went to get breakfast there I saw maybe eight people total, but still got turned away because they just were not doing breakfast service as usual. I found this baffling and just didn't feel it was appropriate to basically rent out the entire restaurant for breakfast to some group, especially one that clearly didn't have enough people staying to necessitate it. Mr. Porter was honestly disappointing for breakfast. I had heard about how great the breakfast at the duchess was so this was a massive disappointment for me, although I was barely eating so I may not have been able to enjoy it anyway.
I just really didn't understand the design of the suite either. I loved the terrace with the hot tub, but the design of the room itself just baffled me. I would hardly have called it a suite given the size and layout. Having the bathroom elements just randomly next to the bed is just weird to me. I know other W hotels are like this so maybe the W brand is just not for me. I did like the shower though; it had a lot of room and good shower heads. I didn't like the bed which was not awesome since the room has absolutely NOWHERE to set up a computer and so I spent all my time sick in bed on my laptop.
Also, you have to call someone to fill the hot tub and it takes an hour and will have to be drained two hours later. I don't understand why they can't just have it persistently heated and filled while the room is occupied. I only used it once because it was just kind of a hassle.
The hotel sent up a welcome bottle of wine or something as a welcome amenity but I don't really drink and even if I did I couldn't drink alcohol due to my sickness. They were kind enough to instead send up a plate of fruit which was a big help because I was eating only 200-400 calories a day of mostly small fruits and berries so it made it so I didn't have to go to the supermarket.
Ultimately I probably wouldn't stay again, mostly due to the price. To be honest, on Jan 1 the hotel loaded a prepaid rate of 330 EUR for every single room except for the wow and extreme wow suites, so I ended up paying only 330 EUR a night for this suite which was an incredible value. Definitely a price error but they honored it and never mentioned it. Would love to know if anyone else booked on that price error. Given the normal rates at this hotel though and in Amsterdam in general, I would probably opt to stay at a Hyatt on points or something instead if I come back to the city.
