Yes, that's correct, the designation is mostly so passengers know where to pick up their bags and where to be picked up. It also may influence which terminal people use for checking in. But none of that has any relevance to the poster's question about connecting.

Yes, it's been announced that the plan is to eventually close the Eagle's Nest. It will be nice to not need to take busses.
