If you change from a 777 to a 737, maybe yes.
But from a wide-body to another wide-body, I don't think so.
(And that rule is for AA, not IB)
And I think that the "substitution of equipment" not acceptable to passengers verbiage was written with business pax in mind, where a change of aircraft can certainly result in drastic changes to the seat comfort.
Economy is economy, really, I don't think you have a valid argument there.
Reasons to be annoyed, yes. Entitlement to change routing, no.
There is a reason why you have not been successful in re-reouting with the agents, you are not entitled to in this case.
I have been re-reouted with no questions asked in the blink of an eye when there was truly a change (significantly increased layover time, much later arrival time, etc). Never because I did not like my new seat assignment.
I didn't use the re-routing option (you may have to pay the fare difference) but I was able to cancel 6 reservations (4 awards, 2 revenue) when AA decided to change our MIA-MAD 777 with a 772 v2, we where in economy and I lost all the good seats for my family, and since they are not under the same PNR as me I couldn't select exit/cabin extra from them. I told them that even with the same aircraft (777), I didn't like the change because they are now 10 rows in economy instead of 9. The AA agent didn't know about that rule, but he called to another department and they refunded me the money + the miles without any penalty.
@conklaven
If you want send me your AA PNR/Last name and I will take a look, I had to deal today with IB (again)
