Mahalo!
--Yes, you just both need to download the app and the person who didn't book it needs to add the 6-character PNR code (reservation locator) to their device. The app shows all boarding passes to all party members, so either of you could load up both passes, or you can each load your own.
--Yes, except for some issues with cached data. You can see what meals will be available and pre-order, as well as check in, issue BP, etc.
--I personally appreciate the sunrise breakfast sandwich. It's practically a footlong and it's pretty good.

Outside of the airport, sure, as long as TSA doesn't give you trouble, which apparently they have been recently.
Inside the airport at SAN, I've rarely found a sandwich for less than $11 with all taxes included. The first time someone ordered the $9.50 (tax free) sunrise breakfast sandwich on an Alaska flight I was upset at how it was both larger and cheaper than the comparable item I bought in the airport. Just one data point.
