No need to split the PNR. The app is fine. Both of you need to download, and you'll need to manually input the PNR # into his "trips" (on his app). Also, you can always simply print the BPs at a check-in kiosk. Besides, since you're checking luggage, the agent can always print your BP.
And if you don't like the app, it isn't as if surgery is required to evict it from your mobile device(s).
