It should have no effect upon your likelihood of clearing to Polaris. The only question is whether or not an upgrade to P+ is worth using a GPU, and that's going to vary from person to person.
If you're thinking that UA is going to try to make sure they use as many certificates as possible by preferentially reserving the J seats for passengers who didn't select P+ as an option -- they're not that clever.
