if you can drive on the left hand side, then renting a car is an option. We did so on our Feb stay. driving round the island is done on a one day trip. You can drive to the city for shopping, food, etc.as prices at the PH are high.
Also, there are a couple of nice spots near the hotel. e.g. Salt Plage for sunset dinner and drinks, but a car is required to get there.

Parking is free for resort guests, you can rent from AVIS via the Concierge and AVIS deliver the car to the hotel, if you just want to rent for a couple of days.
