Only issue I see with US domestic first class are on the regional carriers of your Big 3.

Just like kp333 mentioned, your CRJ and Embraer planes would most likely see a gate check, while traveling in "First Class" on a regional carrier.

I'd say you would be fine 90% of the time, otherwise.
