Meanwhile, BA is terminating the highly lucrative loyalty schemes that it runs with Diners Club and NatWest credit card holders and switching to American Express.

The move is likely to upset thousands of passengers who collect Air Miles and enjoy Executive Club benefits by booking flights using their Diners Club or NatWest cards.

About 110,000 customers use the scheme, generating about £10m in extra revenues for BA. But Amex is thought to have offered the airline more money in return for adopting its card.
