More rumour to add to the above. KLM's 777 flight crew indicate they now have required maps and info stored in onboard systems for both Sydney & Melbourne... 747 would be my preference on this distance!
Frequency at present would be 2 flights per week so down from the 14 code shares with MAS. Launch would still be summer of 05!
