I've had no issues getting preferred seats for those on a separate PNR via phone when booking (most times I've asked, and most of the reason I call in to book) or changing flights. Edited to add - all instances we are flying the same itinerary.

Can't you list one person as a 'travel companion' and they'll at least be on the F list, but below FOs? Edited to add - just noticed this is an international trip, so this won't apply.

For C+, I have had luck asking the GA nicely when there was obvious availability at the gate. Edit - always domestic.
