I had a Canada trip nested in a USA trip. On my inbound CA-USA trip, I could not retrieve boarding pass on-line... had to go to the check in counter to show my home ticket.

This happened a couple of days ago. Just book a cheap AA redemption somewhere in CA, MX or Caribbean.... then you just cancel after you enter the USA.
