The OP did mention SQ as an option for at least part of her trip and I hardly consider that "one of the world's worst airlines" but to each his own I guess. As to the OP's question about high fares I have to suspect the recent increase in fuel costs at least contributes to the recent rise in TPAC fares. Airlines love to through that out when questioned about rising fares but I am sure it is never as much of a factor than than they purport it to be.
So what? I'm 1K as well and unless it's a screaming deal, I would never fly UA outside of North America. Even then, I would hold my nose.
