Probably several reasons, the OP is a 1K with UA so will have multiple benefit there. Didn't mention spouses status but that could be a factor as well. If you know me then you know I certainly won't defend UA but that's for another thread. The OP did mention SQ as an option for at least part of her trip and I hardly consider that "one of the world's worst airlines" but to each his own I guess. As to the OP's question about high fares I have to suspect the recent increase in fuel costs at least contributes to the recent rise in TPAC fares. Airlines love to through that out when questioned about rising fares but I am sure it is never as much of a factor than than they purport it to be.
