The 'red-eyes' aren't really that bad. Depart Shanghai 9pm, arrive Bangkok 1230am or so. At the hotel by 1.30. No traffic Plus it allows a full day in Shanghai.

Coming back is somewhat brutal with a 2am or 3am departure from Bangkok.
