I normally always check bags unless just going away for weekend.

I find I seldom wait that long for my bag (occasionally the wait is too long at the odd airport). Fortunately I run a handling company so at my home airport we always meet our clients' baggage delivery times!

I like to have room in bag for purchases when travelling. Don't like having too much carry-on to lug around airport. Occasionally looking for reasonably priced laundry is a pain in some cities. Sometimes it is extortionate. My suitcases have four wheels and glide along. No problem to take public transport on arrival. I really can't imagine cleaning socks in a basin.

I have only had misplaced baggage a few times and not at all in past decade (IATA figures show misplaced baggage figures have decreased hugely).

I really think the HBO crowd over hype their non checking! But each to his own.
