As damon88 says, the conditions have changed recently at Machu Picchu - three years ago, when bhrubin stayed at Sanctuary Lodge, guests could access the archaeological site at dawn, before the first day-trippers arrived. That is no longer the case. The gates now open to everyone when the first day-trippers arrive. I was informed about this by the hotel late last year.
