Good idea! If your primary areas of interest in St. Louis are not in the airport area, it does not make much sense to stay at an airport hotel (none of the STL airport HH properties are particularly good, IMHO). MetroRail is cheap, convenient, and fast, and takes you to downtown and beyond.
