Here is my consulate's page on the TWOV policy: ???72????????????/Answers to Frequently Asked Questions Concerning 72-hour Transit Visa Exemption for Foreign Nationals Last update? 2013. And still doesn't contain any info about Turkish stamps in passports.
I started a thread on G visas a few months ago because they do still exist. For people from certain countries, they only cost $30, and are better than TWOV because they permit land borders, and don't have regional restrictions. But, US citizens need to pay $140 for all visas, so getting a G would be illogical.
