I'll admit it. Although I have the requisite MBA from a prestigious university, I'm willing to admit how naive I was when I graduated. Oh, I knew quadratic equations and could recite the periodic table from memory. But I didn't know squat about making a sales call or writing an effective marketing plan.
The best folks I ever hired over my career were not those who had advanced degrees. They were instead those who had an innate business sense, a high IQ and a burning ambition to succeed. None of these traits are necessarily linked to a college degree.
The only meaningful credentials a new college graduate usually has is his/her diploma. That may get you in the door but there had better be something else going on or that same college graduate will see the door again. On the way out.
