Be strategic with the paid nights. Little opportunity for the hotel to deny a late departure on a paid night but not so much so on a free night or an award night. I normally book one category up on the paid night to encourage an upgrade on the free nights or the award nights. The hotels don't like to be bothered with guests moving from room to room.
