We tried to get the 144 hour TWOV, but intended to stay for 2.5 days. We had hotel reservations, departure flight confirmations and tour information.
I'm actually with my wife. I have an older passport which expires next year with the Turkish stamp in it. My wife renewed her passport a year ago and was free to enter (which she did to collect our luggage and re-check in) and would have had the Turkish stamp in her old one. They didnt request proof of the old passport, in which case I'd say you have done the right thing having yours renewed.
Interestingly, they've apparently rejected a lot of people today as when we were getting a new boarding pass they mentioned that they've had a lot and never usually get this many. I think it's an overzealous immigration counter or maybe a change of policy... either way, it's farcical!
