The upgrade from economy to PP and then Business requires a copay. Unless it was an Op-up.

With a R fare you are not waitlisted for business. If you make an upgrade request for business you need to support the request with a GPU or miles+copay.
Or to put it another way, why do you think you should have been on the business class waitlist with an R fare on the return?
