As an FYI, the secondary screening you experienced on the JFK-TLV isn't unique to JFK. I've flown to TLV from several European cities and have received the same or more extensive secondary screening prior to boarding the flight.

That beings said, I have not seen anything out of the ordinary screening wise returning from major European hubs to the US. In fact, AMS recently got rid of their 'pre-screening' process located at the base of concourses D & E. You can now go straight to the gate.
