I've tried several times, in the past it was usually no problem but in the past year or so it's not been possible, maybe because of incidents like the kenya flight. Experiencing a landing is as far as I know not possible unless you are a FA or pilot/engineer, only these folks have proper training on where to find the life jacket and how to use the different oxygen masks...
