Just got back from this trip.
I ended up getting CA JFK-PEK on award via NH, and CA PEK-KIX on revenue. Had a 4.5 hr connection in PEK, figured I'll have hours to kill in the lounge.
Get to JFK, CA can't connect the 2 reservations. The check in agent can't see the revenue reservation at all. The supervisor can, but can't connect them.
So what was supposed to be a leisurely airside walk turned into a mad rush and multiple lines - to get a temp visa, to pass through immigration, to re checkin for KIX, and we barely made it.
I've combined award-revenue reservations many times in the past with different airlines - never had a problem with an airline checking me all the way through.

Does anyone have an explanation why CA wasn't able to check me in?
