So essentially what we are saying is that if I miss my connection I may be best to just take the 160TP from this flight. Claim back for the delay.

Claim the hotel on travel insurance - and rebook myself on the cheapest business flight I can maybe just in the UK before my year finished for Gold (which is June).

That sounds like the a sensible solution. And you might even be able to get the points according to the original booking (check the rules of your own FF program).
