I'd say you have a chance with a few HUCAs, if you say you selected this flight because of its seating configurations and now that it's changed you'd like a different feeder flight.

Did you go from 9-across to 10-across? If so, an even better chance.

The key words that I said to an agent were "configuration change." I did not have to do HUCA. Change from a Polarized 777 to sUA 777 is a big deal.
The only minor irritation was that there was PZ1 on the late IAD-SFO flight when I called and when this agent tried to confirm my upgrade. After she changed my flight, PZ1 disappeared and her supervisor would not let her to confirm the upgrade for me. I had a RPU applied to my original IAD-SFO flight. Nevertheless, I still wanted to make the change. The two extra hours at home are important to me.

Edit: The Upgrade with RPU is cleared at T-23 h 40 min. So, I am happy!
