I think the OP was inquiring as to whether or not revenue passengers are allowed to standby for a earlier flight while traveling internationally. Last I heard the answer is no but things may have changed.

The CS agents at the airport have wide discretion (some more than others). The agent may consider how full both flights are, your fare, your FF status, and your attitude. All of these factors may be outweighed by the agent's attitude.
