The only wrinkle on this is that if you are an elite, you receive a minimum of 500 miles. This wouldn't affect your IAD-SFO earnings, but it would give you 500 miles for IAD-EWR rather than 212 miles. Further, you must be on a paid ticket -- not an award one.
