The OP didn't even have a credit card if I read things properly. I can almost understand them refusing on that basis.
I've been asked a few times for "ID" after presenting my credit card and frequent cuest card for the chain de-jour at checkin. I always refuse and give them a BIG hard time. I've never been refused my room. The place that was most unhappy about my doing this was the Marriott Marquis in NYC.
