I think, phrased differently, the point is that you shouldn't buy anything you wouldn't have bought anyway without the credit, because then you haven't actually saved the $300, you've bought something extra.

Or phrased yet another way, you shouldn't think of the credit as offsetting any one specific purchase or purchases but rather a $300 rebate on all of your travel spend over the year.
