I cancelled online and did not ask to have the miles redeposited, in fact the agent seemed to assume that I would want to leave the ticket active. I would do it by calling and check that the ticket is left alone. It would be a good idea to note the ticket number as it disappears from anything visible to you although the agents can still find it. When you are ready to book you can put the flights on hold and then call to have the ticket re-issued. Make sure that you use the ticket or redeposit the miles within 12 months from the original issue date.
ETA: I don't know what happens if you cancel online but perhaps someone else does.
