Given that L is the lowest fare class, don't expect to get an upgrade to New Economy, let alone J/C. You need Y/M/B/H class fares to be able to use the grade. But, like House said, ask, it won't hurt. But don't expect and argue that you should get it.

I can tell you that AC in YYZ will not give you the upgrade as they know the rules and will stick to it. If you get an upgrade, it's because the flight is oversold.
