Skipping the last leg is not the same thing as checking in additional bags mid-itinerary.
I, too, am guilty of taking some flights ex-ARN instead of ex-HEL. For me, the options were to
1) take ex-ARN which was compatible with corporate travel policy, or
2) fly something other than AY ex-HEL as the price would have been cheaper.
OTOH, I rarely check in any luggage. It makes onward journeys on separate tickets more cumbersome. And yes, I often book the last leg on a separate ticket as OW doesn't really serve some of the destinations where I need to go, and single tickets involving non-OW carriers in the itinerary tend to be ridiculously priced.
