Living just a few miles from JFK, and with a good view of the arrivals on the 31s from my desk I have become a spotter almost by osmosis (not that I haven't always held a keen interest in aviation). Back in 2015/2016 I was working on projects through until about 3am every night and JFK is very quiet after about 11.30pm. I'd get to the stage where just by ear I'd be able to tell things such as EVA's JFK-TPE was running a bit late, or depending upon how loud the sound was which runway they were using for departure

What about the fact that the 787 and 777 look completely different?

I used to find telling a 767 and 777-200 apart at distance slightly tricky until I realised the 777 has three wheels on the main undercarriage and the engines are much larger relative to the fuselage, plus the tail area around the APU is very different if you can even see that angle.
