Do hotels lie about being fully booked?

I'm at the Marriott Shanghai for work and I was supposed to check out tomorrow, Thursday. But I needed to extend 2 extra days and check out on Saturday. Two receptionists on different days said they are fully booked and there's no room available.

But on my company travel website, rooms were still available. I booked it through my company website and then went downstairs and asked to keep my same room. They said no problem!

I booked it through my work originally so they should know I'm a corporate traveler. I heard hotels allocate a block of rooms to certain companies, but why exclude me when they already knew. Hmmm
