For situations where there weren't volunteers and and IDB was on the table, it's better now.

On the whole though I guess IDBs were a very small number vs VDBs pre Dao. So fewer people in total with flexible plans are getting paid for that flexibility to help others get on the way at the most efficient price. In that sense worse off overall.
On the other side of the coin, UA does not oversell the flights very often now, especially, originating from outstations. For my recent trip from PVG, I tried to standby for PVG-SFO leaving at 12:10 pm. The flight was full before check-in cut off time (at T-1 hr). Then, there were almost ten no-shows. I used the App to SDC to this flight before the check-in agent did the change for me. There was a cancellations of PVG-EWR the day before this flight. UA could over-book this flight for those pax, but did not.
