I flew Juneyao from PVG-Thailand recently. Not much written here about the airline, so I will give you my experience.

Overall, the airline has potential, but falls flat in many areas. Better than Spring or an ULCC and on par with short-haul China Eastern.

My ticket was booked by my corporate travel agent and no seat assignment was given. Trying to do anything with the Juneyao website in English was a non-starter, so my seat was assigned at check-in. I can honestly say they have the worst website of any airline I have seen, which is the first area of opportunity.

Check-in at PVG was easy, if in J. The Business Class line was very short and they had a loveseat to sit on while you wait. Economy check-in was incredibly long, however, so was quite thankful I wasn’t queueing for that. The agent took my UA FFN (miles posted promptly) and was given access to the Air China lounge. This is the same lounge UA and other Star partners use at PVG. The lounge itself is slightly above mediocre, though I do prefer it to MU’s.

Boarding was a bright spot. The plane was parked at a remote terminal, but they had a minibus for J passengers as opposed to a large, standingroom-only bus for Y.

On the plane - A320 - they had slippers (like every good Chinese airline) and a pillow. PDB was served and FAs were nice (though English was poor). They offered me a choice of meals and asked when during the flight I wanted it. I have never been asked this and quite liked the flexibility. I chose to eat later in the flight. Unfortunately, the meal was not good nor was it hot (let’s call it warm). I received a drink with my meal but was otherwise not asked if I wanted a refill or another drink later in flight.

There was no entertainment nor WiFi on the 5-hour flight. This was a huge negative for me.

There were no announcements from the pilots on the flight. I notice this is often the case on Chinese airlines. I like having an update, but recognize this is a personal preference.

Can’t say it was the best experience, though it wasn’t the absolute worst either. Let’s call it 2 out of 5. With WiFi (or entertainment) it would be closer to a 3. With enhanced food quality and more personalized service it could be a 3.5, which is likely their ceiling.
