I can't answer if you need it, but a French one will work in Italy, and should even have the same type of plug on it. One of the minor benefits of the EU was to unify the voltage across EU nations (at 220 V - UK runs on 240ish, but Euro stuff works here and we work there without converters). Unfortunately, they couldn't do the same for plug design.
