there r are regular maintenance needed after certain hours of flight. so it could sit at the airport for a few hours (although i would believe this should be at the home airport whenever possible to save cost)

but what u said is right:
e.g. the cx plane from West coast eg. YVR-HKG is used to go for a short trip during the day in asia eg. jarkarta.
there is a whole subject called airline planning under 'operation research' and they have softwar to do that as well

for BA, it might well be the maintenance as LHR is their home airport. but if i were running ba there is no reason i wont use it for another short run if it makes sense (bear in mind given the fuel price and there r extra plane capacity u might not want to do so)...if that is the case, i would be very interested to know what flights these plane are used for, wouldn't you?
