Yep, it's not always clear from the website, unlike United (which will have a clear -- REFUNDABLE -- line in the booking receipt) or delta (which will likewise indicate Refundable in the receipt). Even regular flexible domestic fares are usually refundable without a charge, but you always have to check the penalty section of the fare rules. To refund your ticket, first cancel it, then go to prefunds.aa.com and enter your ticket number (will be in the cancellation email). It will have to go to manual review, put in "Refundable Ticket" as your reason for requesting a refund.
Up until about three months ago it would take 5-10 business days to process the refund but recently they've been refunding on the next business day. It's all really quite clunky compared to UA or DL.
